Magistrates in the Community

A number of magistrates take part in the "Magistrates in the Community" programme for schools and other organisations across the county. This initiative is supported by the Magistrates Association. In the recent past this has included many visits to local schools including Bassingbourn, Kimbolton, Longsands College, St Neots, Hinchingbrooke School, Huntingdon Abbey College, Ramsey and Witchford and many other organisations.

We are keen to expand this programme and would be pleased to hear from any school or organisation that would welcome a presentation. Apart from schools, presentations have been given to the WI, Rotary clubs and the University of the 3rd Age.

The presentation can be tailored to suit the audience; it can include an outline of what being a magistrate involves; why people become magistrates; and how courts work. In addition, there is scope for playing a DVD and audience involvement through case studies and discussion of likely sentences in given situations.

We have also been running a successful primary school programme and Mock Trials in our court houses for several years. Local inner city and rural village schools have joined us for a couple of hours to have a look at the court rooms, listen to a short presentation about the law and the role of the magistrate and then have a go at being lawyers, magistrates etc. themselves as part of a mock trial. We have had excellent feedback from these visits and all involved have found the visits to be rewarding and interesting.

We have teams based in Peterborough, Cambridge and Huntingdon with whom you can discuss your requirement. To make contact by email click here.
